1)We have continued our discussion from last year by recalling that medical professionalism is defined by trust, the central commitment to putting patients first.2)We have identified the skills that every physician graduating from a residency program in the U.S. must master to be competent in professionalism. Those skills are:a)Altruism.b) Sound ethical practice, andc) Cultural competence.3) We have discussed a method for teaching medical professionalism called Community Service-Learning, and4) I have described an example of community service-learning from my own experience teaching professionalism to medical students in the U.S. and how, by voluntary service to a community with many needs and challenges, doctors can learn to be altruistic, ethical and culturally competent.
